Side Effects

Downregulation and Stimulation:

Side effects associated with these two phases are very similar to those conditions commonly felt during a normal menstrual cycle, although they may be a bit more noticeable due to the increased hormone levels.

The most common side effects are tiredness and bloating. Less common are cramping, nausea and headaches.

You may feel abdominal discomfort as your ovaries enlarge. If you exercise, it is recommended that you limit activities that jar your ovaries or put them at risk of twisting on themselves. Your doctor will discuss these precautions with you further.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is a common side effect that may occur during the stimulation phase. This occurs as a result of increased hormones which can cause the ovaries to become overstimulated and to secrete fluid into the abdomen. OHSS occurs in mild, moderate and severe forms. Your frequent visits to the medical office will allow your doctor to carefully monitor you for early warning signs of OHSS. The treatment for OHSS is observation, rest and fluids. OHSS usually resolves spontaneously one week after egg retrieval.

Egg Retrieval:

The most common side effect following egg retrieval is cramping. This cramping, which is mild and similar to regular menstrual cramps, should subside after one day.

Your regular period should occur one to two weeks after egg retrieval. You may be asked to visit the doctor one more time after your period for a check-up.
